My own introduction to Jersey City's India Square was years ago attending the raucous, elaborate Navratri celebration -- held over nine nights along Newark Avenue. As a longtime New Yorker and attendee of Indian events, I can tell you: this annual Jersey City event has no equal anywhere in New York. You have to come to Jersey City if you want to experience it.

The India Square neighborhood that supports this event is what we will be visiting tonight. **But tonight rather than squeeze through jammed streets filled with revelers dancing in a quarter-mile-long circle, we will simply be taking a restaurant tour, on a non-celebration night.**

Newark Avenue plays host to a large number of vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian restaurants, and most of the restaurants are vegetarian. Some of these vegetarian restaurants, however, put butter in just about everything. **Tonight we will be visiting the five vegetarian restaurants with plentiful VEGAN options. (As a note, tonight's event is planned as an all-vegan outing. If you are vegetarian who eats dairy, we ask that you skip the dairy for tonight.)**

**Here are the five Indian vegetarian restaurants we will visit, all with plentiful vegan options. At each stop we will be checking and making clear the vegan dishes as a group, before placing our individual orders.**

**1. Bengali Sweet House - Meet here at 7:15pm.**

This is our first stop, at the corner of Newark Avenue & Tonnele Avenue. Our plan is to order something light at each stop. Don't be fooled by the name of this restaurant, they have plenty of non-dessert options. This is an ideal first stop to order something light, so we don't fill up before visiting our other stops. I'll likely get a samosa or two, for $1 each.

**Where To Meet: We will be meeting as a group at 7:15pm in front of Bengali Sweet House, 836 Newark Avenue, at the corner of Newark Avenue & Tonnele Avenue.**

As soon as you get to Bengali Sweet House, say hello to our group, and then you can walk in and place your order. You may first want to consult with us as to what is vegan here, or you can speak with the knowledgeable staff inside the restaurant.

**Train Directions:** Take the PATH Train to Journal Square. From the Journal Square PATH Station, the walk is 0.4 miles to Bengali Sweet House, the first stop on our tour.

From the PATH station, walk down John F Kennedy Blvd for 0.2 miles. From JFK Blvd, turn left on to Newark Avenue, and then walk down Newark Ave. for another 0.2 miles. (As you walk down Newark Avenue, you will be touring India Square. Take a look!)
