Join the VINE Book Club to discuss an important new book about activism with its author, Sarah Schulman

Let the Record Show documents the tactics, strategies, and organizing principles of one of the most effective activist organizations in recent history: AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, or ACT UP. Writing for the New York Times, Rebecca Makkai calls the book a “masterpiece” that will allow other activists to learn from "what one group learned and struggled with and accomplished.” Also writing for the Times, Parul Sehgal calls it "a tactician’s bible.” Because Schulman is a novelist, Sehgal notes, the book has the narrative propulsion of the best fiction even as it teaches us essential activist history.

Sarah Schulman’s novels include The Sophie Horowitz Story (1984); Girls, Visions and Everything (1986); After Delores (1988(; Rat Bohemia (1995); and People in Trouble (1990). Her nonfiction includes The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination (2012) and Conflict Is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility and the Duty of Repair (2016). As an activist, she was a cofounder of the Lesbian Avengers. She has also written plays and screenplays as well as producing the documentary United in Anger: A History of ACT UP.

VINE Book Club is a project of VINE Sanctuary, an LGBTQ-led farmed animal refuge that works for social and environmental justice as well as for animal liberation. More than 700 animals live at the sanctuary in Vermont. Members of the book club come together to discuss books about activism, animals, and the intersections among different forms of oppression.
