Event Description

The Veg Society of DC (http://www.vsdc.org) is pleased to organize a talk by Mary Finelli, President of Fish Feel (http://fishfeel.org), with lunch at the new, all-vegan Pianta at the New Deal Cafe (http://www.newdealcafe.com/food/dinner-menu) in Greenbelt MD.

Mary's presentation, Why Fish Don't Belong on Your Dish, will explore some of the many admirable characteristics of fishes, the immense problems they face, why their plight affects us all, and vegan alternatives to animal-derived seafood and fish oil. A couple of the campaigns that Fish Feel is currently working on will also be mentioned. A Q/A session will follow.

This event will be held at Pianta at the New Deal Cafe, in Greenbelt MD, which serves an accessible, plant-based, Italian-American menu that nurtures the environment, animals, and our health. They also have desserts from Vegan Treats. Pianta at the New Deal Cafe is managed by our wonderful friends at DC Vegan Catering (http://www.dc-vegan.com) so come out and show them your support.
(Free parking is available in the lot just outside and around the shopping center - please read and follow all parking signs. The location is metro accessible with bus connections.)

Please plan to have lunch at Pianta since they are kindly providing the space without additional charge. It is a 'pay on your own' event directly to the restaurant and they accept major credit cards. Please keep your RSVP current.

Arrive at 1130 am to get seated and order food. The event will start at noon and finish around 130 pm. Attendees can mingle more after the talk with Q&A has concluded.

Mary Finelli is President and Chairperson of Fish Feel, and she chairs the Save the Rays Coalition. Mary is a long-time animal rights activist with a B.S. in Animal Science. She has worked with various animal protection organizations, primarily focusing on farmed animals. Mary was the Producer of Farmed Animal Watch, a weekly online news digest sponsored by numerous animal protection organizations. She co-wrote a chapter of In Defense of Animals: The Second Wave, and has assisted with research for several books.

Fish Feel is the first organization devoted to promoting the recognition of fish as sentient beings deserving of respect and compassion. Despite fish constituting the largest category of animals used for food (including as farmed animal feed), and despite huge numbers of fish harmed for research, “sport,” and aquaria, their well-being receives very little attention, even from the animal protection community.

Fish Feel is an all-volunteer organization that relies on individual contributions and grants. Fish Feel is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and a member of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations.
