Event Description

Support the Right to Rescue at trial!
Join us in North Carolina for the trial of DxE co-founder Wayne Hsiung, who is facing multiple felony charges for rescuing a sick goat named Rain from a goat meat farm.
During this week, we will show support for animal rescue in court, build community and take action together. #RightToRescue

About the Case:
Around the world, open rescue is on the rise. In just the past few years, hundreds of people have walked right inside of farms and slaughterhouses and openly rescued animals -- in the US, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, Spain, France, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, and beyond. However, these actions have predominantly focused on industrial-scale farms and slaughterhouses, where public support for such activism is highest. This case will test just how far public support for animal rescue extends.
Sospiro Ranch is a smaller-scale farm than a factory farm, and on its website, it even criticizes CAFOs. However, behind the image of a “humane” family farm, DxE investigators documented sick animals at the ranch who were in need of immediate medical care, including a goat who was infected with an intestinal parasite called coccidia. Investigators rescued a baby goat who was sick with pneumonia and infected with lice. He was named Rain and taken to veterinary care. Later that year, police officers went searching for baby Rain and threatened to send him back to slaughter, but Rain stayed safe, partly due to a public outcry to #ProtectRain
Now, it’s up to a North Carolina jury to decide what Rain deserves and if his rescue was a crime or simply the right thing to do.
