Event Description
Event hosted by Columbia Veg.

Join compassionate friends for our monthly Volunteer WorkLuck at Cotton Branch Farm Animal Sanctuary! You heard that right. WorkLuck! We will be hosting our normal volunteer work day from 11:00am - 1:00pm then we will have a Vegan Potluck at 1:00pm! Enjoy spending time with the animals, working on their care, and eating some awesome vegan dishes from the community! So bring a friend, a vegan dish to share, and recharge with the animals! If the weather is extremely hot or cold, we will bring the party indoors!

If you don't have a dish to bring, don't worry! Come on out and enjoy the day with us!

Cotton Branch Farm Animal Sanctuary (located in Leesville, South Carolina about a half hour from Columbia) has provided refuge for neglected and abused farmed animals since 2004. Horses, goats, donkeys, all different types of pigs, turkeys, geese, ducks, sheep, chickens and a bull named Freckles all live contentedly on the farm.

Typical volunteer activities include mucking barns and coops, raking, and pasture cleaning. Many of the animals will come visit you while you complete your tasks but please remember that some tasks might not include much animal interaction. Volunteering is physically intensive, so expect to get a good workout!

NOTE: Volunteer days are for age 16 and up
If you'd like to arrange a personal tour of the farm (children under 16 welcome), please visit cottonbranch.org/tours

Please leave 4-legged family members at home.

Bring clothes & boots (or sneakers) that are weatherproof and that you don’t mind getting muddy, and work gloves if you have them. Check the weather forecast for zip code 29070 and dress appropriately. Rugged boots (no flip flops) are a must and don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen. If you choose to bring a snack, no meat or dairy please, out of respect for the animals.

Please note that diseases occur naturally among farm animals. Although the chances of such diseases occurring in a factory farm are greater than they are at a sanctuary with standards as high as ours, it can still happen. And some such diseases can be transmitted from animals to humans. Pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems are at higher risk. All visitors and volunteers should practice excellent hygiene after performing such work, by thoroughly washing their hands and scrubbing the bottoms of their shoes with antibacterial agents – especially prior to touching their faces or eating. And ideally, it’s a good idea to change clothes before spending time back in your home after a visit to the sanctuary.

Produce for the animals is very welcome - apples, carrots, pumpkins, melons, bananas, greens etc. Nothing is more fun than feeding pigs and cows and donkeys and turkeys and horses and ducks and chickens..Oh my!

**You must read and sign our Liability & Media Release form to volunteer with us at Cotton Branch when you arrive**

Even if you are primarily interested in exploring a plant-based diet for health or environmental reasons, an event like this can provide a great opportunity to meet and interact with the animals who are commonly bred and slaughtered for food in the U.S. After spending some quality time with these smart, quirky, crafty, silly, affectionate (sometimes moody - like humans) individuals, many people find they can't imagine ever eating them again!
